Lexington, Ky. – Locked in at a 3-3 tie for five innings, the John Carroll Blue Streaks used a three-run ninth inning to defeat the Transylvania University Baseball team 6-3 at Marquard field on Sunday afternoon in the third and decisive game in the team's three game weekend series.
With the loss, Transylvania now holds a record of 5-8 after the completion of the non-conference portion of it's schedule.
The Pioneers received another strong offensive performance from junior shortstop Jared Williams, who went 3-for-5 with a double, and scored a run in the Transylvania loss.
Sophomore starting pitcher Daniel Seitzinger turned in a strong performace in his second start of the season. Seitzinger scattered six hits over as many innings, and struck out two Blue Streaks while only allowing 3 runs.
After giving up two runs to the Blue Streaks in the top of the first, the Pioneers got on the board with a run in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a Williams double and an RBI single from senior right fielder Connor Blevins.
John Carrol added another run in the top of the second, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Blue Streaks heading to the third inning.
Blevins got the action started for the Pioneers in the bottom of the third when he smacked a double down the left field line. Next, junior catcher Blake Hart got on base with a walk, and Blevins scored a run on a single from junior first baseman Taylor Henley. Later in the inning Hart came home on a passed ball, tying the game at 3-3.
Over the next five innings neither of the two teams could push a run across the plate, and extra innings seemed imminent.
However, in the top half of the ninth, the Blue Streaks brought three runners home thanks to two hits and three Transylvania errors.
The Pioneers had their chance in the ninth, as they left two runners stranded on base, giving John Carrol the 6-3 victory.
The Pioneers will now turn their attention to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference portion of their schedule, as they take on the Hanover College Panthers on Tuesday afternoon, March, 21. First pitch between the BPanthers and the Pioneers is set for 4:15 p.m. at Marquard Field.
