Pioneers baseball comes up on short end of home run derby against Hanover

Hanover, Ind. – The Transylvania baseball team endured a 10-5 road defeat at the hands of the Hanover College Panthers Tuesday afternoon in a high-scoring affair at KT Young Ballpark.

The result dropped the Pioneers to 13-24 for the season, and 8-16 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

The Panthers outhit Transylvania 14 to 10 in a game that saw most of the innings go the Pioneers' way, save for a critical fourth inning which unraveled their bid to upset Hanover's senior day.

Each team picked up a run in the third inning as sophomore outfielder Daniel Seitzinger stole home on a double steal, and Hanover responded with a tying run in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch. Transylvania went ahead once more in the top of the fourth inning, 3-1, after a pair of RBIs by freshman outfielder Riley Willbur and sophomore infielder Jason Pastoor.

But momentum shifted seismically in the bottom frame, as the Panthers answered with seven runs to take control of the game, 8-3. The first three batters of the inning reached base, and the Pioneers labored to find outs. The final blow was dealt by Hanover on a two-out home run for the final two runs of the inning.

Transylvania scored one more run in each of the fifth and eighth innings, attempting to fight its way back into the game, but a two-run sixth inning from Hanover put the game firmly out of reach.

Senior pitcher Zack Patton received the loss for Transylvania as four different Transylvania pitchers took the mound for the day. Starting sophomore pitcher Josh Miller had a game-high four strikeouts on the day.  Senior first baseman Blevins led the Pioneers offensively, going 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Willbur also procured a 2-for-4 showing at Hanover.

McAnelly and Blevins each blasted home runs for the Pioneers Tuesday.

The Pioneers wrap up their regular season this weekend on the road as they face the Bluffton University Beavers in a three-game weekend series beginning Friday, May 5 at 4:15 p.m. at Memorial Field in Bluffton, Ohio.
