Lexington, Ky. – Taking on the Centre College Colonels in their second meeting of the 2019 season, the Transylvania baseball team fell 19-5 in seven innings on Tuesday afternoon at Marquard Field.
The Colonels plated a run in each of the first three innings to gain the upper hand on the Pioneers to move to 20-10 on the season. Transylvania fell to 12-15 overall following the nonconference matchup.
Centre made the first move of the day, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning and adding another in the top of the second to grab a 4-0 advantage.
Transylvania answered back with its most potent inning of the game in the bottom of the second as the home team cut Centre's lead to 4-3. Wade Lopiccolo led off with a double into left field and T.J. Keck moved Lopiccolo to third on a groundout before taking advantage of a wild pitch to score Transy's first run of the day.
During the second inning, Taylor stole second base to reach a conference-leading 17 stolen bases for the 2019 campaign and bag the 53rd stolen base of his career, tying Mitch Kuczek for second all-time on the program's list in career stolen bases.
Centre took control of the game in the following inning, scoring eight runs to go ahead 12-3 on the Pioneers. The Colonels added a trio of runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Transylvania found two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run double by Keck, who led the way with a 3-for-4 day at the plate.
Freshman starter Devon Hart took the loss for the Pioneers to move to 1-1 on the season; Hart went 2.2 innings, allowing four hits, seven walks, and two strikeouts. Centre tallied 10 hits on the day to nine for Transy. Riley Willbur provided three of the Pioneers' nine hits with a 3-for-4 game at bat.
The Pioneers continue their schedule tomorrow as they visit the Spalding University Eagles in Louisville, Kentucky. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. from Derby City Field.
