Atlanta, Ga. – Transylvania field hockey senior goalkeeper Allyson Benz has been selected as the Southern Athletic Association Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Benz, a senior from Mason, Ohio (Mount Notre Dame HS), was spectacular in goal for each of the Pioneers' games last week.
The senior tallied an astonishing 21 saves in the Pioneers' 1-0, double-overtime victory over the Oberlin College Yeowomen on Saturday, September 8. The 21 saves were a season-high and just one short of her career-high in a game.
Benz followed up the Saturday performance with another strong showing in the Pioneers' 9-0 loss to the College of Wooster Fighting Scotts on Sunday, September 9, in which she recorded 15 saves. The game was the third straight contest in which Benz recorded at 15 or more saves.
Benz currently possesses 63 saves on the season, which leads the SAA in that category. Along with her conference-leading saves total, Benz has recorded one shutout in 2018 and boasts a save percentage of .797, ranking second in conference.
The player of the week award is the first of the season for Benz and the first by a Transylvania field hockey player in the 2018 season. This is the fourth time Benz has won the award in her career.
Benz and the Pioneers return to action on Friday, September 14, when they travel to Danville, Kentucky for an SAA showdown with the Centre College Colonels. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start at South Campus Field.
