Bluffton, Ohio – The Transylvania men's basketball team rolled to a 74-59 victory over the Bluffton University Beavers at the Sommer Center on Saturday afternoon.
The game served as the Pioneers' first taste of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action on the season.
With the victory, Transylvania remains undefeated with a record of 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the HCAC.
Fresh off receiving this week's HCAC Player of the Week award, sophomore guard Gabe Schmitt led the Pioneers in scoring with 10 points on a 4-for-5 field goal shooting performance. Schmitt has scored 10 or more points in all four of the Pioneers games this season.
Senior center Robert Dence provided a strong interior presence for the Pioneers as he scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds, and blocked two shots in 19 minutes of action.
Looking to take control early, the Pioneers jumped out to a 9-0 lead just under three minutes into the first half.
The Pioneers continued to build their lead throughout the first half thanks to shooting 61 percent as a team, culminating in a 44-24 halftime lead for Transylvania.
With the game safely in hand, Transylvania head coach Brian Lane made use of his entire bench as the team coasted to a 74-59 victory.
Up next for the Pioneers is a home matchup with the HCAC rival Hanover College Panthers on Wednesday night, December 6. Tipoff is set for 7:30 at the Beck Center.
