Transylvania men's basketball executes at home for double-digit win against Manchester

Lexington, Ky. – A balanced offensive attack earned the Transylvania men's basketball team a 77-54 victory over the Manchester University Spartans at the Beck Center on Saturday afternoon.

The victory improves Transylvania's record to 9-6 overall, and 6-2 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, forming a four-way tie atop the league standings.

Junior guard Gabe Schmitt led the Pioneers with 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field to go along with two steals and an assist in just 16 minutes of action.

The Pioneers' passing game was on display early in the day as a sequence of unselfish basketball ended with a wide-open look from three-point range for senior forward Bo Schuh, which he knocked down to give the Pioneers a 16-9 lead.

Following a 7-3 run by Manchester, sophomore guard Gavin Root made his presence felt off the bench with a straightaway three-point basket that extended Transylvania's lead to 22-16 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the opening half.

Early in the second half, Transylvania freshman center Luke Schroeder scored four quick points that were part of an 11-0 run which extended the Pioneers' lead to 52-26. The run was keyed by Transylvania's defense, which held the Spartans without a field goal for the first five minutes of the half.

The Pioneers continued to control the game and with 10:32 remaining, sophomore guard Will Sivills knocked down a three-pointer that extended the Transylvania lead to its largest of the day at 62-31.

With the game well in hand, head coach Brian Lane was able to give his starters extended rest by making use of his large group of reserves. In all, 20 Pioneers saw action in the game, none of whom played more than 16 minutes.

Transylvania outrebounded the Spartans 45-32 in the game, held a 36-32 advantage on points in the paint, and recorded 17 assists in comparison to just 12 for Manchester.

The Pioneers will continue their current homestand when they host the Franklin College Grizzlies on Wednesday, January 16. The matchup between the Grizzlies and the Pioneers is set for a 7:30 p.m. tip at the Beck Center.
