Berger and Lane excel on the back nine as Pioneers men's golf improves in second round at Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island, Ga. – The Transylvania men's golf team improved upon its round-one score by 11 strokes as the Pioneers turned in a 296 in Saturday's second round of the Jekyll Island Invitational tournament hosted by Oglethorpe University.

Transylvania shot an eight-over-par 296 on Saturday to deliver a total score of 603 with one round remaining on Sunday at Jekyll Island's Pine Lakes Course.

The Pioneers continued to find their groove over the three-day event at Jekyll Island, led by Jack Berger's even-par 72 in the second round. After bogeying the fourth and fifth holes, Berger parred his next 12 holes of the day before signing off on 18 with his second birdie. Berger leads the Pioneers on the individual leaderboard with a share of 48th place.

Harrison Lane turned in a round to remember, leading the Pioneers with four birdies on the day, including three straight to end his round. Lane's birdies on 16, 17, and 18 followed a string of four straight pars to finish two-under-par on the back nine.

Spencer McKinney had another strong day for the Pioneers with birdies on the 12th and 18th holes to turn in a two-over-par 74 for the day. Blake Young sank two birdies for the Pioneers to finish with a 77 in Saturday's second round. Sam McNamara rounded out the pack with an 82, adding two birdies to Saturday's team total of 12. Four of five Pioneers finished with either better or identical scores on Saturday than they did in Friday's round one.

Transylvania sits in 20th place upon the 30-team leaderboard, nestled one stroke behind Greensboro, and five strokes behind Kenyon College.
