Latrobe, Pa. - A consistent onslaught of scoring from the Transylvania men's lacrosse team lifted the Pioneers to a conference-opening 13-7 victory against the Saint Vincent College Bearcats Saturday at the SVC Turf.
Transylvania jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one quarter, and tallied three goals in the second quarter, four more in the third quarter, and three in the fourth quarter to maintain the offensive pressure against St. Vincent all afternoon.
The Pioneers improved to 3-3 on the season, and 1-0 in Ohio River Men's Lacrosse Conference play with the win. Transylvania moved to 4-0 against St. Vincent all-time in head-to-head competition.
Senior attack Zach Roby rang in the scoring with a goal that came 2:15 into the contest on a quick setup from freshman midfielder Thompson Summers. Transylvania quickly built a 3-0 lead with 6:50 remaining in the first quarter after senior midfielders David Smith and Zack Riggs each discovered the back of the net against the Bearcats.
St. Vincent was the last team to score in the first quarter, but the Pioneers quickly swarmed the host team as the second quarter began, scoring three more unanswered goals. The second quarter scoring came courtesy of Mesmer, and freshman midfielders Trenton Sneed and Corbyn Buchart.
The Bearcats forced their way back into the contest with two consecutive goals inside the final 90 seconds of the half to cut Transylvania's lead to 6-3 at the break.
In the highest-scoring quarter of the day, Transylvania outscored St. Vincent 4-3 in the third to take a 10-6 advantage into the final 15 minutes.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Pioneers as they outscored the Bearcats 3-1. A goal from Summers at the 4:25 mark of the fourth served as the final score of the day for the Pioneers in their highest-scoring output of the season.
Transylvania outgained St. Vincent 36-29 in ground balls, and had a plus-six margin in turnovers. Senior goalie Cooper Fogle claimed the win with 57 minutes in goal and 11 saves on the afternoon.
The Pioneers will next be in action on Wednesday, March 22 as they visit Wilmington College. Faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m. in Wilmington, Ohio.
