Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's and women's tennis teams opened the spring portion of the 2018-19 season with a pair of matches against the Sewanee Tigers at Top Seed Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon.

In the first match of the day, the Transylvania women's team dropped a 9-0 decision to a strong Sewanee side.

The Pioneers' best chance at a victory came at No. 5 singles as freshman Alyssa Igyarto battled through a tiebreak before bowing out 6-3, 7-6 to Sewanee's Sarah Gray.

The match was the first played by the Pioneers under the guidance of Pioneer women's tennis coach Bill Carey, who was recently named head coach of the Transylvania women's tennis team, taking over for Kevin Calhoun, who now serves as the Transylvania men's tennis coach and Assistant Athletic Director.

"I honestly couldn't be more thrilled with the way the team competed against a really good Sewanee team today," remarked Carey. "They are a great group who have been well prepared by Coach Calhoun. They showed great togetherness and have a really bright future ahead. I was really proud of every single one of them."

The Transylvania men's team took to the courts in the afternoon to face Sewanee and showed tremendous fight before falling 8-1 to the Tigers.

The Pioneers' lone win of the day came via the team of freshmen Hugo Kouhkna and Nick McNamee, who picked up a thrilling 8-6 victory in No. 2 doubles play.

Transylvania freshman Arjun Gupta took part in the most exhilarating match of the afternoon, a No. 1 singles battle in which Gupta led early before falling 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4).
