Nicholasville, Ky. – Arjun Gupta delivered a dominant victory in number one singles play on Tuesday afternoon but the Transylvania men's tennis team was defeated in full by the Thomas More University Saints, 6-3 at the Top Seed Tennis Club.
The Pioneers dropped to 3-6 overall following Tuesday's result while the Saints moved to 8-9.
Tuesday's match marked the first meet back in the Pioneers' home state following a fruitful spring break week down in Orlando, Florida which was capped off with a match at the USTA National Tennis Center last weekend.
Back on their home turf Tuesday, the Pioneers endured 8-2 losses in both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Arjun Gupta and Hugo Kouhkna pulled out a clutch victory in No. 1 doubles against Jared Haught and Jeffrey Schenk with a 7-5 tiebreaker win to squeeze a 2-1 deficit heading into singles play.
The Saints found the upper hand in the No. 3 through No. 6 singles matches with four victories to pull off a 6-3 victory. Noah McNamee went back and forth with Jaret Fidler in No. 4 singles, coming back from a 6-2 setback in the first set to win a convincing 6-1 second set before bowing out, 6-2 in the third and final set.
Gupta showed off his might in the No. 1 singles match, leaving nothing in doubt with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Derrick Kwok. Kouhkna won again in singles play, delivering a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Schenk in the No. 2 doubles match.
The Pioneers will hit the road this weekend for one final pair of nonconference matches before commencing Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season play the following weekend. The Pioneers will visit Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, March 23 for an 11:00 a.m. match and take on Otterbein the following day, Sunday, March 24 at 11:00 a.m.
