Transylvania softball splits with DePauw in regular season finale

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania softball team completed the 2019 regular season by splitting a two-game series with the DePauw University Tigers at Hall Field on Tuesday night.

The Pioneers raced past DePauw to a 6-1 victory in game one before dropping a thrilling game two by the final score of 7-5 in nine innings.

With the split, Transylvania's record moves to 25-11 on the season, while the Tigers complete their regular season schedule with a 28-12 record.

The Pioneers were led by Brittany Mumford, who went 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs, and Becca Messing, who posted a 3-for-7 performance at the plate to go along with two RBI and a run.

Pitching for Transylvania in game one was Kameron Bowling. The sophomore was electric in the circle, striking out four Tigers and allowing just one run in the complete-game victory.

Trailing DePauw 1-0 in the second, Transylvania scored three runs on hits from Cece Wittry, Messing, and Mumford to take a 3-1 lead going into the third.

The Pioneers extended their lead to 5-1 in the third with RBI singles from Messing and Alyssa Nunn.

Transylvania added one final insurance run as Wittry scored after Laurel Major took a pitch on the arm with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth.

With the 6-1 advantage in the top of the seventh, the Pioneers' defense turned a double play and Bowling registered her fourth strikeout of the night to clinch the victory.

In game two, Transylvania took an early 1-0 lead after Mumford scored on a bases-loaded walk by Jessica Powell in the bottom of the first.

After the Tigers pulled ahead with two runs in the second, the Pioneers evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Nunn came home on a DePauw wild pitch.

DePauw took a 5-2 lead in the top of the fifth after the Tigers put together four hits and scored three runs against the Pioneers.

Trailing DePauw 5-3 in the seventh, the Pioneers came storming back to even the score at 5-5 with back-to-back doubles from Meg Liter and Annie Schuck, sending the two teams to extra innings.

After neither team was able to create anything in the eighth, DePauw manufactured a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, forcing Transylvania into a 7-5 deficit.

The Pioneers were unable to rally in the ninth, allowing the Tigers to escape with the 7-5 victory.

Up next, Transylvania will open HCAC Tournament play with a first-round matchup against the Franklin College Grizzlies at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 2. The three-day tournament will take place on the campus of Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
