Mount Berry, Ga. – The Transylvania women's soccer team grappled with the Covenant College Scots into overtime before the Scots came out on top with a 1-0 sudden death victory Saturday evening on the campus of Berry College.
Covenant's Addy Cronan dealt the lone and only goal against Transy in the 96th minute to end the match and hand the Pioneers their first loss of the season. Transylvania dropped to 2-1 overall following Saturday's hard-fought contest.
For much of the late afternoon and into evening, Transylvania was the beneficiary of a majority of offensive opportunities, thanks to an aggressive attack. The Pioneers for the match outshot Covenant 12 to 11 on overall shots, and six to five in shots on goal.
The game witnessed a scoreless first 45 minutes, but the Pioneers came out firing in the second half. Transylvania continued to migrate its line upfield while earning corners on a consistent basis.
It was late in the contest when Covenant started to find a sense of offensive consistency. The Scots nearly struck late on a shot deep in the box taken from a left cross, and then another shot from 18 feet away that punched high by junior goalkeeper Ally Barfield. But the Pioneers responded with considerable runs of their own over the final 10 minutes, as both sides were unable to crack the other's goalkeeper.
As the match journeyed into overtime, Covenant continued its newfound rhythm when Cronan connected six minutes in to conclude Saturday's match.
Transylvania aims for redemption Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. as they take on host school Berry College.
