Winston-Salem, N.C. – Freshman forward Quinn May scored her second career goal in the Transylvania women's soccer team's 1-0 victory over the Salem College Spirits at Varsity Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Pioneers' third straight victory improves their overall record to 3-1 while Salem's record now drops to 1-4 on the season.
Senior goalkeeper Ally Barfield got the start in goal for the Pioneers and picked up the shutout victory after recording two saves and not allowing a Salem goal in 45 minutes of action.
The Pioneers took control of the game just before halftime when junior back Brett Edwards sent a pass towards goal that May blasted into the back of the net, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead that they would not relinquish.
Transylvania's defensive line held strong throughout the second half, limiting the Spirits to just five shots and preserving the one-goal lead.
Salem held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks while the Pioneers outshot the Spirits 20-12 for the game.
Up next the Pioneers will attempt to extend their winning streak to four games when they travel to Columbus, Ohio to face the Capital University Crusaders on Wednesday, September 12. First touch between the Pioneers and then Crusaders is set for 7:00 p.m. at Bernlohr Stadium.
