Danville, Ky. – The Transylvania swimming and diving team squared off with their Central Kentucky archrivals, the Centre College Colonels on Friday night at the Boles Natatorium for their first official dual meet of 2019.

It was a night in which the youth movement and distance performers for Transylvania stood out on Friday as sophomore Drew Dodds collected a first-place finish in the men's breaststroke and junior Mattie Fogle delivered a pair of wins in the distance races, striking a first-place showing in the women's 100 freestyle (11:36.84) and the women's 500 freestyle.

There was strength in numbers for the Colonels as the home team celebrated its senior night with a 131-67 victory for the women's squad and a 123-63 win going to the Centre men.

Despite the difference in volume, the young blood of the Pioneers performed well in a variety of events; in addition to Fogle's headline night, sophomore Emma Lloyd swam quickly in her first January performance, taking first place in the women's 100 backstroke with a 1:04.86 finish.

Junior Sarah Haerle recorded a top-two finish in the women's breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:13.07 and added a third-place finish in the women's 200 individual medley.

In other men's races, it was a night to remember for freshman Reece Arredondo, who continued a simmering start to his first season with the Pioneers by taking first in the men's 1000 freestyle race (10:38.96) and the men's 500 freestyle (5:08.63).

Sophomore Ben Smith did his part with a first-place display in the men's 200 freestyle race (1:53.98), winning by more than a second against a trio of Centre contestants.

Freshmen Dylan Ruddy and Devon Parker also posted a pair of promising finishes. Ruddy took second in the men's 100 butterfly while Parker finished top-two in the men's 100 breaststroke.

The Pioneers are next in action as they continue the road portion of their schedule by heading to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Anderson University next Saturday, January 26. The teams will compete at 1:00 p.m. in Anderson, Indiana in a makeup meet of last Saturday's previously-scheduled meet which was postponed due to weather.
