Youngsters catapult Pioneers women's tennis to 7-2 match win at Defiance

Irwin replicated her dominant performance from doubles play with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Breneman in No. 2 singles

Defiance, Ohio – Victory belonged to the Transylvania women's tennis team on Saturday morning as the Pioneers captured a 7-2 match victory against the Defiance College Yellow Jackets at the George M. Smart Center.

Bolstered by a 2-1 start in doubles play to start the day, the Pioneers picked up victories in No. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 singles to carry the day in a one-sided victory.

Sophomore Merrick Irwin and Anna Burch swept Chelsey Braunwart and Courtney Alexander in No. 3 doubles, 8-0, while junior Kearstin Bruther and sophomore Lucy Herrington made quick work of opponents A.J. Breneman and Sydney Huston in the No. 2 doubles match with a 6-3 win.

Irwin replicated her dominant performance from doubles play with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Breneman in No. 2 singles, while her doubles teammate Herrington delivered a resounding 6-0, 6-0 victory over Alexander in the No. 4 singles match.

Senior Lilian Williams worked her way to a 6-3, 6-4 win in No. 3 singles against Cayla Walker, and Bruther and Burch picked up sizable victories in No. 5 and No. 6 singles competition, respectively.

Transylvania improved to 4-6 for the 2017 campaign, and 2-3 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

The Pioneers look ahead to a Monday match at home against Earlham on October 9. That match versus the Quakers also serves as Senior Day 2017 for seniors Mary Grace Amato, Myriah Porter, and Williams.
