Cincinnati, Ohio – The Transylvania women's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 victory over Mount St. Joseph University Lions at the Mount Tennis Courts on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Pioneers' record improves 3-4 overall and 3-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play while the Lions fall to 1-7 and 0-5 in the HCAC.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead thanks to a dominant sweep of doubles play that included an 8-1 win by the team of freshmen Porsche Robinson and Jessica Burton, an 8-2 win by freshman Alyssa Igyarto and senior Kearstin Bruther, and an 8-3 win by junior Merrick Irwin and sophomore Reagan Jobe.
Transylvania's dominance continued into singles play as Robinson cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory in No. 1 singles action followed by a 6-0, 6-0 win for Burton at No. 2 singles. For the season Robinson now boasts a record of 7-3 in both singles and doubles play.
Irwin rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 final score in No. 3 singles while Bruther was dominant in a 6-0, 6-1 No. 4 singles victory.
Wrapping up the strong showing by the Pioneers were Igyarto and Jobe, who claimed 6-2, 6-0, and 6-3, 6-0 wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively.
The Pioneers will return to Lexington for a matchup with the Defiance College Yellow Jackets on Saturday, October 6. The match is set for a 10:00 a.m. start at the Transylvania Tennis Complex.
