Greenwood, Ind. – High expectations are in store for a young and rising Transylvania volleyball team, which was chosen to finish third in the annual preseason survey of the 10 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference coaches.
Transylvania, which advanced to the HCAC Conference Tournament in 2016 as the sixth seed, received 73 out of a possible 100 points in the 2017 coaches preseason poll.
Transylvania lost just one player to graduation in 2016 and returns last season's Freshman of the Year, setter Hannah Talkers, and fellow All-HCAC selection, sophomore outside hitter Jordan Horne. The Pioneers also welcome back senior libero Marissa Coutinho, who received All-HCAC Honorable Mention acclaim last season.
"Having a preseason ranking of number three is a great step to start the season," commented Transylvania volleyball head coach Kyle Walton. "I think last year we showed our youth at times but we also showed that we are a young team that has a lot of athletes ready to make strides this upcoming season. There is no doubt that number three is a step in the right direction but we will be striving to win the HCAC and make it on to the NCAA Tournament."
Reigning conference regular-season champion Hanover College finished first in the poll and received eight of a possible 10 first-place votes. Bluffton University checked in at second in the coaches poll with 85 points and the other two first-place votes.
Transylvania commences the 2017 volleyball season on Friday, September 1 as its visits Marietta College for the two-day Marietta College Invitational.
