Rose, who scored 1,059 points as a player, posted a sterling 160-57 record in eight seasons as Transy's head coach. That performance soon led to other head coaching jobs. He took the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and Purdue University to the NCAA Final Four and received Coach of the Year honors in each college conference in which he coached.

Rose then moved into professional basketball. He was a coach for the San Antonio Spurs and the New Jersey Nets and also coached three U.S. Olympic basketball teams.
