WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Transylvania opened play Sunday in the Russ Matt College Baseball Invitational and dropped an 8-2 decision to cross-state rival Spalding.
The Pioneers are 2-4 after the loss while the Eagles improve to 7-1.
Transy spotted the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the second before coming back to tied the game in the bottom of the frame. John Michael Cowley led off the inning with a single and Nick Edwards followed with a one out double, leaving runners at the corners. Zach Riney got the run home with a ground out to short.

Spalding scored twice in the sixth inning to retake the lead, then scored five more over the next three innings to pull out the win.

Edwards and Zach Bynum each had a pair of hits in the Florida opener. Jamie King started on the hill, going 5.1 innings and allowing five hits and three runs, one earned. He fanned three and walked only one batter. Blake Oyler, Michael Birkenhauer, and Graham Winchester finished up, combining for four strikeouts and a walk.
The Pioneers are back in action in Florida on Monday, taking on Greensboro in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Transy will play a total of six games on their spring break trip.
