Transy offense on display in sweep of Greensboro
AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Transylvania  pounded out a season-best 15 hits Monday and the Pioneers used a late rally to subdue Greensboro 9-1 in the first game of a doubleheader in the Russ Matt Invitational.
The Pioneers improved to 4-3 after winning the second game, 9-3. The Pride drop to 9-12.
Greensboro led 1-0 in the first game heading into the bottom of the fourth, when Transy put five runs on the board. The Pioneers pulled away with four more in the sixth.
Zach Riney had three hits while Zach Bynum, Graham Winchester, John Michael Cowley, Ben Pelham, and Nick Edwards pounded out two apiece. Bynum, Cowley, and Riney each slugged doubles.
The offensive outburst supported winning pitcher Shelby Dixon, who sent the distance to gain his second win of the year. He allowed 10 hits, but just one run with three strikeouts and a walk.
Transy put together six hits to score five in the fourth. The big hit was a two-run double off the bat of Bynum.  Pete Travisano and Cowley each drove in runs with two-out hits.
In the second game, Transy scored nine runs on nine hits, scoring all its runs in two innings. The Pioneers scored five runs in the second inning to go ahead 5-2, then clinched the game with a four-run sixth.
Matt Morgan moved to 2-0 on the season with five innings of five-hit pitching. He allowed three earned runs with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Elliot Desilets pitched the final inning.
Edwards and Bynum each had two hits for the Pioneers and Pelham drove in a pair of runs. Seven different Pioneers had RBIs in the game. Bynum’s double was Transy’s only extra base hit.
After an off-day on Tuesday, the Pioneers are back in action in Florida on Wednesday, taking on Mount Union at 9:30 a.m. in a single nine-inning game.
