Pioneers Take First Game Over Defiance, 5-3
DEFIANCE, Ohio— The Pioneers halted a late threat by Defiance, taking the first game of the weekend series, 5-3, Saturday.

Defiance pulled within two, 5-3, in the ninth but the Pioneers' defense converted a crucial groundball out end the game, as the Yellow Jackets left three runners on in the bottom of the ninth.

A double to right center in the top of the first inning, helped the Pioneers gain an early 1-0 lead. With Bynum aboard, Trey Simpson laid a sacrifice bunt down to move Bynum to third. Bynum later scored on a ground ball out from Nick Edwards, giving the Pioneers the edge after the top half of the first.

The Pioneers held the Yellow Jackets scoreless through the first four innings, while adding two more runs in the top of the fourth.

Pete Travisano singled up the middle to get things going for the Pioneer offense. Simpson, again, laid a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt down, putting Travisano in scoring position. A wild pitch from Defiance allowed Travisano to take third, before a RBI single from Sam Liggett scored Travisano and gave Transylvania a 2-0 lead.  But the Pioneer offense was not finished. Transylvania scored again on a Zach Riney sacrifice fly to right field, driving in Liggett for the 3-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the fifth with sacrifice fly from Ryan Kohlhofer scored Aaron Helland for the first run of the game and closed the Pioneer lead to 3-1.
After two quick outs in the top of the sixth, the Pioneers were able to plate another run before getting picked off to end the inning. Hunter Voshell doubled to center field for the only hit of the inning for the Pioneers. Riney legged out an infield grounder which was bobbled by a Defiance defender, allowing Voshell to cross the plate. The Pioneers led 4-1, before Riney was picked off to end the inning.

Defiance scored after Zack Reed singled and swiped two bases. Reed scored on a throwing error by the Pioneers.

The Pioneers got two on in the eighth, with two fielding errors by Defiance. With Kameron Mason and Travisano aboard, Simpson, for the third time in the game, dropped a sacrifice bunt to put Mason and Travisano both in scoring position. Liggett knocked a grounder to third, allowing Johnson to score giving the Pioneers the 5-2 lead.

Tom Banahan secured the win for the Pioneers. Banahan posted five innings on the mound, allowing only three hits and one run.

The final two games of the three-game series conclude tomorrow with a doubleheader at Defiance College's Rutter Field. First pitch is slated for noon with the second game to immediately follow.
