Five runs in the seventh gave the Beavers the nod in game one Saturday, stealing a 7-6 win over the Pioneers.
Bluffton took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, before Andrew Bynum helped the Pioneers get on the board in the third inning.Bynum drove a 2-2 pitch for a double as the Pioneers' first batter of the inning. An erred throw from the Beavers put Bynum on third with Kameron Mason at the plate. Mason forced a fielder's choice allowing Bynum to cross the plate for the Pioneers to close in on the Bluffton lead, 2-1.
The Pioneers tied at two in the top of the fourth, thanks to a solo shot from Kody Ross. Hunter Voshell singled, putting two on for Zach Riney. Riney then legged out a bunt, moving Voshell to third and allowing Jones to score on another Bluffton throwing error to gain a 3-2 lead.
Transylvania added to its lead in the fifth on a RBI single from Jones, extending its lead to 4-2. Riney sent a two-out RBI single to first, scoring Jones.
The Beavers, however, responded with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh, claiming a 7-5 lead heading into the eighth.
In the top of the eighth, the Pioneers narrowed the Bluffton lead to 7-6 on a solo shot from Simpson but that was all the Pioneer offense could generate, dropping game one.
In game two the Pioneers plated four in the top of the ninth, but the damage was done. An eight-run fourth inning gave the Beavers a large enough cushion to fend off the Pioneer offense.
The Pioneers plated runs in the first three innings of play, jumping out from 2-0 on RBI doubles from Liggett and Nick Edwards.Voshell drew a base on balls to lead off the inning and later scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Simpson, giving the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.
Jones and Voshell both got on board to start the inning for Transylvania in the third, before a RBI single from Aaron Johnson put the Pioneers up four. Voshell also scored in the inning on a fielding error hit by Bynum, extending the lead to 5-0.
The Beavers put up two in the bottom half of the third, along with 10 more runs over the next three innings, taking a 12-6 after six.
Transylvania rallied in the ninth for four runs on five hits, pulling within three, 13-10. Edwards started the inning with a lead-off double, as Ross followed with a RBI double to score Edwards. Pete Travisano drove an 0-2 pitch for a RBI single Bynum sent Travisano home on a RBI double, as Simpson returned the favor with a RBI single to score Bynum before the final out of the game.
The Pioneers return to action Friday, as they host a three-game conference series against Franklin College. Friday's game is set for 4 p.m. at Marquard Field.
