LEXINGTON, Ky.—Transylvania University's baseball team lost a pair of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference games on Saturday to the visiting Manchester University Spartans by scores of 8-7 and 11-7. In the first game, a go-ahead homerun in the top of the ninth was the deciding blow while a five run sixth innings was too much to overcome in the second game.
Transylvania took a lead early in the first game of the day, scoring one run in the bottom of the second and three in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead. In the third, outfielders Trey Simpson and Hunter Voshell led off the inning with back-to-back walks followed by a sacrifice bunt from outfielder Hunter Jones to move runners to second and third. Third baseman Nick Edwards followed that up with a 2 RBI single to bring both runners around. Back-to-back singles from second baseman Kody Ross and designated hitter Connor Blevins produced one more run for the Pioneers before a sacrifice fly from catcher Blake Hart brought Ross in for the final run of the inning.
Transy extended their lead in the fourth and sixth with one run in each frame but Manchester got four runs back in the seventh to draw the score to 7-6 in favor of the Pioneers. After a scoreless eighth, Manchester hit a two-run homer to left center to take the lead for good. Transylvania was held scoreless in the bottom of the ninth and the game ended as a 7-6 loss for Transy.
Voshell, Jones and Edwards each picked up two hits and Edwards added three RBIs to lead Transylvania. On the mound, Braden Johnson worked seven innings of five run baseball, striking out six before handing the ball over to Adam Boone out of the pen. Boone picked up the loss, giving up two runs in two innings of work.
In the second game of the day, the Pioneers fell behind early and were never able to find their way back into the lead. After a three run second inning and a one run fourth from Manchester, Transylvania added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to make the score 4-3.
Manchester picked up five in the top of the sixth and Transy was unable to recover despite a four run bottom of the eighth inning. In the eighth, second baseman Rex Rogers led off with a single, followed by shortstop Jared Williams. After a fielder's choice eliminated Williams at second, runners were on first and third with one out. Hart singled through the right side, picking up an RBI. After a fly out from outfielder Kameron Schwartz, Simpson picked up a two RBI single. A single from Jones added another run to the scoreboard and drew the score to 9-7.
Two runs from Manchester in the top of the ninth pushed the lead to 11-7 and sealed the game for the Spartans.
Simpson, who started the series finale on the mound, went 5.1 innings, allowing six runs and striking out one. Bryce Crader, Aaron Johnson and Schwartz combined to work 3.2 innings out of the pen, giving up three earned runs on six hits. At the plate, Jones and Williams tallied two hits each and Jones' two RBis were a game-high for the Pioneers.
Transylvania, (3-11, 0-4 HCAC) travels to Hanover on Tuesday for their next game.
