Baseball drops first two games of series against Defiance

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Transylvania University's baseball team dropped a pair of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference decisions on Saturday to the visiting Defiance College Yellow Jackets. After a 6-5 loss in the day's first game, the Pioneers dropped the second game by a score of 5-1.

In the first game, Transy entered the bottom of the third inning trailing 1-0 but picked up four runs to take the lead. After a one-out walk from outfielder Hunter Voshell, outfielder Hunter Jones singled putting runners on first and second for third baseman Nick Edwards. Edwards recorded an infield single to load the bases. Designated hitter Connor Blevins singled to left scoring one run and after a wild pitch scored the second run of the inning, catcher Blake Hart picked up a sacrifice fly and second baseman Kody Ross picked up an RBI double to end the scoring for Transylvania.

The Pioneers held onto the 4-1 lead until the fifth inning when the Yellow Jackets picked up a run to make the score 4-2. The score stayed there until the top of the eighth when Defiance added four runs to retake the lead at 6-4. Transy picked up a run in the bottom of the ninth and got the tying run to third base but were unable to bring him home and fell 6-5.

Transylvania outhit Defiance 11-7, led by four hits each from Edwards and Blevins . Ross added a team-high two RBIs. On the mound, starting pitcher Braden Johnson worked 7.1 innings, striking out three and allowing five earned runs.

The second game of the day saw Transylvania fall behind 1-0 in the top of the fourth but they would knot the score at one in the bottom of the sixth. The rally started with a leadoff single from Edwards, followed by an infield single from Blevins. After a sacrifice bunt from Hart, Ross picked up a sac fly for the RBI to even the score.

Defiance added two runs in the top of the seventh and one in the top of the ninth to take a 5-1 lead to seal the win.

Starting pitcher Jamie King was the story on the mound, going 6.1 innings and allowing two earned runs while striking out four. At the plate, Transy picked up 12 hits with Voshell , Ross and shortstop Jared Williams picking up two each. Blevins added three hits as the Pioneers picked up 12 hits in the contest.

Transylvania (7-17, 4-10 HCAC) concludes the series tomorrow with a noon game.
