FRANKLIN, Ind.—The Transylvania University baseball team dropped its series opener to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Franklin College on Friday by a score of 15-6.
The Pioneers knocked back 15 hits, including freshman shortstop Jared Williams' first career homerun, but left 12 runners on base as they were unable to overcome a 3-0 first inning deficit. Outfielder Trey Simspon led the way for the Pioneers, going3-for-5 including a double and RBI. Outfielders Hunter Voshell and Hunter Jones added two hits each for Transylvania. Voshell and Williams each had two RBIs for Transy.
Starting pitcher Braden Johnson picked up the loss on the mound, going 4.1 innings before exiting the game trailing 7-2. Matt Birkenhauer, Aaron Johnson and Zack Patton combined to pitch the final 4.2 innings of the ball game.
Transylvania (8-18, 5-11 HCAC) will look to win the series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon. Senior Jamie King will start the first game of the day for the Pioneers on the mound.
