LEXINGTON, Ky.—The Transylvania University baseball team picked up a crucial win over Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Mount Saint Joseph on Tuesday by a score of 10-4. The game was held at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, home of the single-A Lexington Legends, as part of a promotional effort by the university.
The experience of playing in a professional stadium in front of a large crowd was not lost on head coach Chris Campbell. "Our guys played really well and every one enjoyed playing in a professional ballpark," he said. "It was a great event for the Transy community and the atmosphere was great. We appreciate all the support from the students, faculty and staff and hope to continue this event in the future."
The Pioneers dominated the game from the onset. Starting pitcher Tom Banahan worked a perfect 1-2-3 top of the first inning, inducing three straight popups to start the game. Transylvania came to bat in the bottom of the frame and quickly jumped out to a lead, drawing three walks before a single from third baseman Nick Edwards brought the first two runs of the game. After Edwards stole second, designated hitter Connor Blevins recorded a sacrifice fly to bring outfielder Hunter Jones in to score. After a strikeout, catcher Blake Hart reached on a throwing error and Edwards scored, giving the Pioneers a 4-0 lead after the first.
Banahan relented a run in the top of the second but Transy got it right back, when Edwards singled to right field to score Jones. The score would hold at 5-1 until the bottom of the fourth when the Pioneers added three more runs. Second baseman Kody Ross led off the inning with a single to left and Simpson reached on a bunt single. Outfielder Hunter Voshell bunted and an error by the pitcher scored Ross. A sacrifice fly from Jones and a groundball to third from Blevins scored two more runs for Transy, giving them a 9-1 lead.
Transylvania tacked on two more in the bottom of the sixth when Voshell led off the inning with a double and Jones picked up a bunt single to put runners on first and third with no outs. Edwards doubled to left center to score Voshell and move Jones to third. Blevins picked up another RBI to push the Pioneer lead to 10-1.
Mount picked up two runs in the eighth and one run in the ninth but the large Pioneer lead was too much to overcome, as Transy held on for the 10-4 victory.
Edwards was the story at the plate for Transy, goingd 3-for-3 and driving in four RBIs. Blevins went hitless in four at bats but drove in three runs, executing in key situations. All told, the Pioneers tallied nine hits in the game. Simpson and Jones each added two hits of their own.
On the mound, five Pioneer pitchers combined to throw nine innings, allow just seven hits and strikeout five Lions hitters. Senior Jamie King picked up his third win of the season, allowing just one hit and striking out two in two innings of relief work.
The Pioneers (10-19, 7-12 HCAC) return to action this weekend in HCAC play against Anderson University. The three-game series is scheduled to begin Friday afternoon in Anderson, Ind. at 4:00 p.m.
