LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Transylvania University Pioneer baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the Golden Eagles of Spalding University on Wednesday. After dropping the first game of the day 9-5, the Pioneers won the night cap in dominating 8-1 fashion.
The Pioneers fell behind early in game one, allowing a single run in the first and four runs in the third. Transy tacked on its first run of the game in the top of the fourth when designated hitter Connor Blevins singled to left field to score outfielder Hunter Voshell. Spalding scored three in the bottom of the inning however to take an 8-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the Pioneers tallied four runs on four hits to draw the score to 8-5. First baseman Ryan Bale led the inning off with a single to left before shortstop Jared Williams singled to right to put runners on first and second for outfielder Trey Simpson. Simpson grounded out to second base, advancing the runners. Voshell walked, loading the bases for outfielder Hunter Jones, who doubled to left field, driving in two RBIs. Blevins hit a two-out double to score Voshell and Jones, capping the scoring for Transylvania in the inning.
The Golden Eagles pitchers held the Pioneers at bay over the final two innings, however and the game ended 9-5 in favor of Spalding.
The second game saw Simpson dominate the game on the mound, tossing seven innings of three-hit baseball, allowing just three hits and striking out six. Simpson did not allow a hit until there was one out in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Pioneers jumped out to a quick lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first as outfielder Kameron Schwartz doubled down the left field line with two outs to score Blevins and Simpson. An error in the top of the second allowed two more Pioneer runs to score and Transy took a 4-0 lead into the third inning.
The score would hold at 4-0 until the top of the fifth, when Transylvania added two more runs. Blevins led off with a double, followed by a bunt single from Simpson. Simpson stole second base and third baseman Justin Warren singled to left to score Blevins and Simpson.
In the sixth inning, second baseman Rex Rogers hit a leadoff double and stole third base before Jones hit a one-out sacrifice fly. Shortstop Aaron Johnson followed with a single up the middle and stole second base to get into scoring position for Blevins who hit another double to score Johnson.
Blevins was the story of the day at the plate for the Pioneers as he went 6-for-8 with three doubles and four RBIs. Jones also had a productive day, going 2-for-5 in the two games with three RBIs. Simpson picked up his second win of the season with his commanding performance.
