Pioneers drop tight games in doubleheader to Bluffton

LEXINGTON, Ky.—After winning the series opener on Friday, the Transylvania University baseball team dropped a pair of tight games on Saturday to the Bluffton University Beavers. The Pioneers lost by scores of 6-5 and 10-9 in the two games.

In game one, Transy jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four innings. In the bottom of the third, the Pioneers scored two runs utilizing a leadoff double from catcher Blake Hart, a bunt single and error from second baseman Kody Ross and a sacrifice fly from left fielder Hunter Voshell to plate the runs.

In the fourth, Transylvania picked up three more runs to push the advantage to five. Third baseman Nick Edwards led off the inning with a single to left before first baseman Ryan Bale hit a one-out single up the middle. Shortstop Jared Williams singled to load the bases for Hart. Hart grounded out to first for the first run of the inning before Ross singled to left field, scoring two more runs.

Bluffton answered with four runs in the top of the fourth to bring the deficit to one and scored two in the seventh inning to take the lead for good at 6-5.

Bale and Ross notched two hits each as the Pioneers banged out 10 hits in the game. Starting pitcher Jamie King went seven innings, allowing six earned runs and striking out three.

In game two, Transylvania held a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth inning before the Beavers scored four runs to take a 5-2 lead. The Pioneers responded with four of their own in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead. Right fielder Hunter Jones started the inning with a walk and first baseman Taylor Henley was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with no outs. Second baseman Rex Rogers reached on an error by the pitcher that allowed the first run of the inning to score. Hart singled to right to bring another run home. Shortstop Aaron Johnson singled to load the bases. Center fielder Trey Simpson grounded into a double play but picked up an RBI as Rogers scored. Voshell singled up the middle to bring the fourth Pioneer run of the inning home.

After Bluffton scored on in the fifth, the Pioneers tallied three in the seventh inning to take a 9-6 lead. Designated hitter Connor Blevins hit a one-out triple to score Voshell who had reached on a single. Edwards singled, bringing Blevins in and Rogers was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring the ninth run of the game home for Transylvania.

In the top of the ninth, four Bluffton runners scored on five hits, two walks and interference by the Transylvania defense to take the lead at 10-9. Transylvania was retired in order in the bottom of the frame as Bluffton claimed the series win.

Transylvania again had 10 hits in the contest, led by three from Voshell and two from Blevins and Johnson. Rogers had two RBIs in the game to lead the Pioneers.

The doubleheader marked the end of the season for Transy, as they missed the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament.
