Pioneers Baseball’s late rally thwarted against UW-Oshkosh in Alabama

Birmingham, Ala. – The Transylvania baseball team wrapped up its weekend trip south with a battle against the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans Sunday at Striplin field as the Titans took an 8-4 win in a game full of hits.

For the second time in less than 24 hours, the Pioneers took on a team with national acclaim; the Titans entered the week as a team receiving voting points in the D3baseball.com Top 25 poll. Testing their mettle against an annual power, the Pioneers found contact and success, but yielded 14 hits on a day where defense could not match their offensive standard.

The Pioneers issued the first statement in the game as senior outfielder Connor Blevins delivered an RBI single to score junior infielder Jared Williams, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. But with Blevins waiting on second base with one out, the Pioneers could not move him forward and stayed put with a 1-0 lead.

UW-Oshkosh matched the Pioneers' score in the bottom of the first with a single run after a wild pitch from starting pitcher, senior Bryce Crader. The Pioneers held Oshkosh to just one run in the first inning, but the Titans picked up two more runs in the second inning, and four in the bottom of the fourth. The Pioneers took advantage of a Titans error in the top of the fourth to tack on one more run.

The Pioneers began making noise again in the seventh inning as freshman catcher Cole Ratliff led off with a double. UW-Oshkosh quickly registered two outs, but Ratliff took advantage of a wild pitch to move to third base. Freshman infielder David McAnelly obliged with an RBI single to score Ratliff. On the ensuing at-bat, Blevins drove in McAnelly with a double into left field to cut the Titans' lead to 8-4. But the Titans escaped the inning without any further damage, and retired the side the rest of the way.

Blevins's offense stood out as the senior went 3-for-5 on Sunday with two RBIs.

The Pioneers return to play Wednesday as they visit Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky. The Pioneers and Golden Eagles will face off at 6:00 p.m.
