Pioneers surface on short end of Louisville hitfest vs Spalding

Louisville, Ky. – One big inning proved to be the difference Wednesday night as the Transylvania baseball team fell to the Spalding University Eagles, 12-6 at Derby City Field.

Like their recent prior contests, the Pioneers found themselves involved in another high-scoring game that saw both teams combine for 26 hits, 10 of which belonged to Transylvania.

Senior outfielder Connor Blevins led off the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead for the hopeful visitors. But the hometown Eagles evened up the score in the bottom of the first inning to set the stage for a second-inning eight-run explosion. The heavy offensive output saw the Eagles claim a 9-1 advantage after two innings of play and senior pitcher Adam Boone enter in relief of starting pitcher, freshman Robert Young.

Five different pitchers saw action for Transylvania on Wednesday; Boone and sophomore Landon Lynch worked three cumulative innings and combined for four strikeouts during their service.

The Pioneers spent the rest of the evening trying to whittle away at Spalding's cushion, using a pair of extra-base hits from senior Rex Rogers and freshman Nick Nelson in the top of the third inning to climb back into an 8-3 game. Transylvania shaved another run off its deficit in the fourth inning when Rogers drew a bases-loaded walk.

In the fifth and sixth innings, Spalding tacked on three more insurance runs to pull away in the final stages of the game.

Blevins and freshman infielder David McAnelly led the way with the senior going 2-for-4 at bat, and McAnelly enjoying a 3-for-4 evening.

The Pioneers turnaround for a Friday evening meeting with the Berea College Mountaineers on Friday night in Berea, Kentucky. First pitch between Berea and Transy is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. before the teams reconvene on Sunday in Lexington at Marquard Field for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
