Lexington, Ky. – Junior infielder Jared Williams smacked two home runs as the Transylvania baseball team cruised to a 9-4 win against the Mount St. Joseph University Lions Tuesday at Marquard Field.
The Pioneers led wire-to-wire against the Lions as Williams, the leadoff hitter, began the game with a solo home run shot to deep right center field, handing the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. The powerful start seemingly inspired his teammate, junior third baseman Blake Hart, who followed three at-bats later with a two-run home run to right field to bolster Transylvania's lead to 3-0.
The Lions grabbed a run in the top of the second inning to slice Transy's lead to 3-1, but Williams struck again in the bottom of the third inning as the leadoff hitter in that frame for a 4-1 advantage.
Transylvania upped the ante in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring two more runs; freshman catcher Cole Ratliff made his way home from third base on a balk, and sophomore outfielder Daniel Seitzinger smacked a sacrifice fly RBI to bring in freshman infielder Riley Wilbur for a 6-1 lead. The Pioneers never looked back as sophomore pitcher Landon Lynch collected the win in five consistent innings of work, allowing two earned runs and registering three strikeouts.
Freshman pitcher Robert Young collected the save, finishing up the last four innings of work by allowing two hits and grabbing two strikeouts.
Transylvania collected 11 hits on the day, with Williams going 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in.
The Pioneers improved to 8-10 overall, and 3-2 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Transylvania is next in action this weekend when it visits the Defiance College Yellow Jackets in Defiance, Ohio. That series begins Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
