Hudson Chastain named to All-HCAC First Team to lead list of Transylvania baseball postseason award winners

All-HCAC 1st Team

Lexington, Ky. – Sophomore infielder Hudson Chastain was selected to the 2019 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team for baseball, the conference announced Monday.

Chastain, a sophomore from Knoxville, Tennessee (Christian Academy of Knoxville) produced an unparalleled season for the Pioneers in becoming the first Transylvania baseball player to achieve First-Team honors in three seasons.

Along with Chastain, junior outfielder Riley Willbur (Louisville, Ky. / Trinity HS) was named an All-HCAC Honorable Mention and senior infielder Jason Pastoor was selected to the HCAC's All-Sportsmanship Team.

In his second year with the Pioneers, Chastain solidified his reputation as one of the premier hitters in Division III baseball, leading the HCAC in hits with 66 over the regular season and 70 in total. Chastain's 66 hits shattered the Pioneer program record for single-season hits by two.

During the 38-game regular-season slate for Transylvania, Chastain recorded a .410 batting average, ranking in the top-2 of the HCAC in batting average as he hit successfully in 35 of 38 games. Chastain started the season on a 16-game hit streak that totaled 23 straight games dating back to the end of the 2018 season.

In 2019, Chastain led the Pioneers in RBI (36), hits, doubles (12), on-base percentage (.457), and slugging percentage (.480). Among his conference peers, Chastain ranked sixth in RBI, sixth in total bases (82), and seventh in doubles and on-base percentage. He was top-15 in the conference in slugging percentage.

The sophomore ranked second on the Pioneers in walks (15), extra-base hits (12), and third in stolen bases (15) and runs (30). Chastain was equally as impressive defensively, commanding a .939 fielding percentage and turning 19 double plays.

Chastain earned postseason HCAC accolades for the second straight season after being selected as an All-HCAC Honorable Mention as a freshman last year.

Willbur had a breakout season for the Pioneers, finishing eighth in the HCAC and second on the Pioneers in batting average (.360), appearing in all 40 games. Including HCAC Tournament games, Willbur tallied 63 hits, nine doubles, one triple, and 23 RBI.

In the HCAC, Willbur ranked seventh in runs (37), sixth in stolen bases (16) and eighth in total bases (74). Twice in 2019, Willbur went 5-for-6 from the plate (March 10 vs. Alma, May 9 vs. Defiance) and had 19 multi-hit games.

Willbur's Honorable Mention award is the first all-conference accolade of the junior's career.

The Pioneers completed an emergent season, finishing fifth in the HCAC to clinch its first HCAC Tournament berth in three seasons and ranking top-three in the conference in team hitting.
