Daytona Beach, Fla. – The Transylvania cheer and dance teams prepare to compete at their respective national competitions beginning on Thursday, April 5 as the cheer team kicks off the championship week at the National Cheerleaders Association Collegiate Championship at the Ocean Center Convention Center in Daytona, Florida.

The week of national competitions continue on Friday, April 13 when the Transylvania dance team travels to Las Vegas, Nevada to compete in the Dance Team Union College Classic at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

In order to qualify for this year's championships, the Pioneers cheer squad held an at-home camp this past September and received an official bronze bid from a championship representative who was on-site at Transylvania to witness the cheer routines.

The 2018 season marks the first time that the Pioneers cheer and dance teams have competed at separate locations; the NCA Collegiate Championship in Daytona will mark the fourth-consecutive year in which the Transylvania cheer team has competed at that competition. This year, for the first time, the Transylvania dance team will head west to Las Vegas to compete in the second-annual Dance Team Union College Classic.

The Transylvania cheer team begins its competition in the preliminary round on Thursday, April 5 at the Ocean Center, and again in the evening at 7:30 p.m.

In the evening session, the Pioneers will compete in a challenge cup in an aim to qualify for the finals round on Friday, April 6.

For the 2018 championships, the Pioneer cheer team is competing in the Intermediate All-Girl Division III division.

The Transylvania dance team looks ahead to its first time competing in the Dance Team Union College Classic this upcoming week at Mandalay Bay. The dance squad will open up competition in the College Open, which is a format that includes a routine composed of hip-hop, kick, jazz, and pom segments for a total routine of over two minutes. Competing teams will be judged on artistry, technique, execution of routine, and the overall crowd effect for each portion.

The Pioneers have been preparing rigorously for the championship since the conclusion of basketball season.

"We are excited to showcase the talent that we have this year and all of the hard work that we have put into every practice of every week for the past two months," said sophomore Megan Little. "We've tried so many new tricks since the basketball season that we're looking forward to performing at championships."

During their preparations, the dance team has practiced three times a week, learning new techniques, including new turn and jump sequences, choreography for the various segments, and the piecing together of all those elements.

"The hip-hop section is what we thought we would have challenges with the most, but then we encountered a lot of great feedback from fans and peers as we tried out some of these dances at basketball games, so we decided to keep some of that choreography for our nationals routine," added freshman Kristen Hocklander.

Before the dance team takes off for Las Vegas next Thursday, the Transylvania dancers will showcase their routine at their annual Friends and Family National Preview on Wednesday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. The showcase will allow the dancers an opportunity to perform for the Transylvania community and put their hard work on display.
