Roanoke, Va. – The Transylvania field hockey team wrapped up its weekend odyssey through the state of Virginia with a 3-1 loss to the Roanoke College Maroons at Donald J. Kerr Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The loss moves Transylvania's record to 2-4 on the season while Roanoke improves to 4-2.
The Pioneers' offense started strong on Sunday, jumping out to a 1-0 lead early in the first quarter on a goal from Harper Zeitz.
However, Roanoke's offense proved to be superior for most of the day as the Maroons outshot the Pioneers, 26-4.
Five minutes into the second quarter, the Maroons leveled the score on a goal from Katie Martin, then took control of the game with a pair of goals late in the third quarter. The Pioneers looked for quality chances in the final quarter but ultimately came up empty, allowing the Maroons to prevail.
Goalie Sidney Varney matched her career-high performance from Saturday with her second-straight 14 save performance in the loss on Sunday. Varney now leads the Southern Athletic Association with 40 saves on the season.
Transylvania will next open Southern Athletic Association play as the Pioneers host the No. 18 ranked Centre College Colonels on Saturday, September 28. The matchup between the Colonels and the Pioneers is set for a 12 noon start at Pat Deacon Stadium.
