Randolph-Macon prevails over Transylvania field hockey in nonconference affair

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania field hockey team fell 5-0 to the Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jackets on Sunday afternoon at Pat Deacon Stadium in a nonconference contest.

The Pioneers saw their overall record fall to 3-9 with the loss while Randolph-Macon improved to 7-7 on the year.

Facing off with the Yellow Jackets on their 2019 Senior Day, the Pioneers dueled with Randolph-Macon in a closely-contested first half. A lone score by the Yellow Jackets occurred 11 minutes into the contest as Katie Brookman found the back of the goal from the left side near the edge of the circle off a penalty corner opportunity.

The 1-0 Randolph-Macon lead stood through the second quarter as each team split possession and the Pioneers sought the tying goal. The quarter witnessed one total shot as the Yellow Jackets carried the one-goal lead to the break.

Transylvania's defense held firm until the 39th minute when Maria Teresa Ambrogi-Torres scored off a backfield giveaway by the Pioneers for a 2-0 lead. The momentum increased for the Yellow Jackets as the visitors burst for three more scores in the final quarter to grab the win.

Sidney Varney took the loss in goal for the Pioneers while finishing the afternoon with five saves. Randolph-Macon completed the afternoon outshooting Transylvania 12 to 4 and outgained the Pioneers 11-4 on penalty corners.

The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, October 27 when they host Rhodes College in a Southern Athletic Association conference match. The regular-season home finale for the Pioneers is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start from Pat Deacon Stadium.
