Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania field hockey team was unable to overcome an early deficit as the Rhodes College Lynx won over the Pioneers, 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Pat Deacon Stadium in a Southern Athletic Association conference match.
After eight minutes of scoreless play to open up the afternoon, Rhodes emerged for three sudden outburst to amass a comfortable 3-0 lead that held firm for the rest of the afternoon.
Rhodes improved to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in SAA play while the Pioneers dropped to 3-10 on the season and 1-2 in SAA competition.
The Lynx were the first to pounce eight minutes into the contest when the Lynx's Hannah Luckes scored on a penalty corner from the left side as her shot slipped through traffic and off the boards for a 1-0 lead.
Rhodes delivered soon thereafter as Luckes registered her second goal of the day with 5:39 to go in the first quarter. The Lynx continued to stay in rhythm as Rhodes scored less than two minutes later on a deflected shot for a 3-0 lead.
Transylvania's defense locked in for the rest of the afternoon as Rhodes was held scoreless over the final three quarters. Offensively, the Pioneers tried to increase its counterattacks into the second quarter but the Lynx's last line of defense denied the home team a high dosage of shots.
Sidney Varney picked up the loss in goal for the Pioneers; the sophomore made five saves on Sunday.
The Pioneers will take to the road next weekend to face a pair of opponents on the campus of SAA member Concordia University Wisconsin. Transylvania will face Converse College on Saturday, November 2 at 10:00 a.m. Eastern time at Tomasini Stadium in Mequon, Wisconsin and take on Concordia University Wisconsin on Sunday, November 3 at 12:00 p.m. Eastern time.
