Crestview Hills, Ky. – The Transylvania men's basketball team continued its fiery start to the 2017-18 season, powering past the Thomas More College Saints, 88-72 at the Connor Convocation Center on Saturday night.
Sophomore guard Spencer McKinney registered a season-high 15 points off the bench to lead the way for Transylvania on an efficient 5-for-6 shooting night from the floor. McKinney added three 3-pointers, two rebounds, and two assists in a balanced victory for the Pioneers.
Transylvania moved to 3-0 on the season after the weekend victory at Thomas More while the Saints suffered their first loss of the season to drop to 3-1.
McKinney was one of five Pioneers to hit double-digit scoring; junior guard Cooper Theobald and junior forward Kyle Gullett each contributed 12 points apiece, combining to shoot 9-for-11 from the floor. Sophomore guard Gabe Schmitt had his third double-digit game to start the season, adding 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting with four rebounds.
Junior forward Bo Schuh added 13 points in a reserve role in front of his hometown fans; the former Covington Catholic product shot 5-for-8 from the field in 13 minutes of play.
The Pioneers enjoyed an efficient night in every manner, shooting 65 percent from the field and 9-for-14 from the three-point line. Transylvania also hit 11-of-13 free throws in a crimson-hot performance.
After waging a close game early, the Pioneers broke out of a 17-16 lead to outscore the Saints 28-16 the rest of the first half. Back-to-back triples from Theobald and Schmitt down the stretch in the first half pushed the Pioneers' lead to 15 before Thomas More nabbed a bucket before the break.
Transylvania outscored Thomas More 43-40 in the second half to cruise to a convincing victory. The Pioneers took profound care of the ball on Saturday, notching 15 assists to just nine turnovers.
The Pioneers will break from gameplay for one week before commencing Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play next Saturday, December 2 at Bluffton University. Conference action commences between Transylvania and Bluffton at 4:00 p.m.
