Cincinnati, Ohio – A spirited comeback attempt by the Transylvania men's basketball team came up short as the Pioneers fell to the Mount St. Joseph University Lions by the final score of 65-62 at the Harrington Center on Wednesday night.
Sophomore guard Michael Jefferson led the Pioneers with 17 points on the night, 15 of which came in the second half. Joining Jefferson in double figures was fellow sophomore guard Will Sivills, who tallied 11 points in 31 minutes of action off the Transylvania bench.
The Lions got off to a hot start, taking an early 8-2 lead over the Pioneers. Transylvania responded with a 6-0 run, capped off by a layup from senior forward Bo Schuh that evened the score at 8-8 with just under 13 minutes remaining in the first half.
Plagued by cold shooting, the two sides to struggled to make baskets over the final 12 minutes of the half, but with just 24 seconds remaining on the clock, Mount St. Joseph's Devin Young knocked down a three-point basket to give the Lions a 27-24 lead at the half.
In the second half, Mount St. Joseph continued to build its lead, which eventually grew to its largest of the night at 54-44 with 7:07 remaining in the game.
With under three minutes to play, the Pioneers increased their defensive pressure, causing a pair of back-to-back Lions turnovers. Transylvania turned the Mt. St. Joseph errors into baskets by Jefferson and sophomore forward Dominique Turner to even the score at 60-60 with 45 seconds left in regulation.
The Lions responded with a three-pointer and a pair of free-throws to take a 65-62 lead with 13 seconds left on the clock. Transylvania had two good looks from three-point range in the final 10 seconds, but neither shot would fall and the Lions held on for the 65-62 victory.
The loss drops Transylvania's record to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, while Mount St. Joseph improves to 5-9 and 3-4 in league play.
The Pioneers will return to Lexington to host the Manchester University Spartans on Saturday, January 12. Tipoff between the Pioneers and the Spartans is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Beck Center.
