Carmel, Ind. – Transylvania men's basketball senior guard Gabe Schmitt has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week for men's basketball, the conference announced on Monday.
Schmitt, a senior from Louisville, Kentucky (Trinity HS), becomes the first winner of the conference award for the 2019-20 season. Schmitt garnered the honors after leading the Pioneers to a pair of wins in their opening weekend of play this past weekend in Cincinnati, Ohio at Mount St. Joseph University versus two regional opponents.
Schmitt nailed 15 of 16 free throws in Friday's season-opening 87-78 victory over Wilmington (Ohio) College at the Harrington Center to lead all players with 24 points. Schmitt attained his 24 points on just six field-goal attempts, hitting 4 of 6 shots from the floor.
Less than 24 hours later, Schmitt was the high scorer again in Transylvania's 65-62 win against Ohio Northern University, logging 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field. For the week, Schmitt scored 40 points on 77 percent shooting from the field, hit both of his three-point attempts, and shot 86 percent from the free-throw line (18-21 FT). The guard also totaled five assists, six rebounds, and two steals on the week to boost the Pioneers to a 2-0 start to the season.
This is the second HCAC player of the week award of Schmitt's career (week of November 27, 2017).
Schmitt and the Pioneers return to play on Friday, November 15 for their home opener against the Emory & Henry College Wasps. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Eastern time at the Clive M. Beck Center in Lexington.
