Men's golf well within reach of lead after first day of Rhodes College Fall Classic

MEMPHIS, Tenn.— Casey Gilligan and Nick McCarthy led the way for the Transylvania University men's golf team  in Sunday's opening round, as both finished three-over on the day at the Rhodes Fall Collegiate Golf Classic.

The Pioneers are currently in ninth place and are well within reach of the current leaders, Southwestern University and Berry College, who are tied after the first 18 holes.Clay Church and Jeff Meade added rounds of 76 and 78 respectively to keep the Pioneers in the top ten following the first day of play. 

The Pioneers sank eight birdies on the day, along with an eagle from McCarthy which was one of only four on the day among the entire field. Meade led Transy with three birdies Sunday.

The event is being held at the Tunica National golf course, a 7, 125-yard par 72 course. The event will conclude with 18 holes Monday.
