Pioneers complete fall season with third round at Gordin Classic

Delaware, Ohio – The Transylvania men's golf team fired a team score of 310 in the third and final round of the 2016 Gordin Collegiate Classic tournament on Monday afternoon to record a ninth-place finish at the event.

The Pioneers, competing against a majority of teams who appeared with them at last spring's 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships, finished with a three-round score of 897. That total was two strokes greater than Ohio Wesleyan and St. John Fisher, who each finished tied for seventh place.

The Pioneers entered the day seeking to replicate a team-best second round score of 284, fired the afternoon before. Most scores veered over 300 on the final day of the competition after 10 of 12 teams finished lower than 300 in the second round.

The Pioneers were led on the final day by freshman Spencer McKinney's whose slow and steady style translated into a 14th place finish with a three-round score of 220. McKinney shot an even 71 in the third and final round after shooting a 76 in round one, and a 73 in round two.

Sophomore Blake Young, whose three-under 68 led the way for the Pioneers in Sunday's round two, shot a 79 on the final round to come in second on the Pioneer leaderboard and 21st on the overall individual leaderboard.

Senior Rob Canady shot the second-best score of the Pioneers on the final day, with a seven-over 78 to finish with a three-round total of 228.

The tournament completed the fall portion of the 2016-2017 season for the Pioneers, who are aiming for their 11th straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship in the spring, and a subsequent 11th consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships.

The Gordin Classic capped off a strong month for the freshman McKinney, and Young, who is one of two returning players who participated in the spring championships.

The Pioneers are slated to return to action for the spring portion of their season on March 11, 2017 when they journey to South Florida for the South Florida Shootout.
