Stone Mountain, Ga. – Freshman Spencer McKinney fired a two-round 152 to lead the Transylvania men's golf team Sunday afternoon at the Discover Dekalb Emory Invite hosted by Emory University.
McKinney fired a first round two-over 74 on Saturday to set the pace for his five-man team at the Smoke Rise Country Club. Keyed by McKinney's accuracy, the Pioneers sat in 12th place after round one and finished the weekend in 13th place.
McKinney finished the weekend at eight-over par, in a tie for 42nd place on the individual leaderboard. Freshman Ben Turner finished one stroke behind McKinney in a tie for 47th place. Turner's best score came in his second round as he shot a three-over par 75 for a two-day score of 153.
Checking in at third place among his Pioneer peers was senior Rob Canady, who shot a nine-over 157 over his two rounds.
Sophomore Blake Young's best day came on Saturday as he shot a six-over 78. Young carded a 158 for the weekend. Junior Carson Wattenbarger was the other Pioneer on the five-man squad; his second-round 81 was his lowest score.
McKinney led the Pioneers with seven birdies on the weekend, tying for the 7th-most birdies by any individual at Smoke Rise. Turner produced six birdies while Canady had four. Young led the Pioneers in pars with 19.
The Emory Invite marks the final tournament for the Pioneers before they advance into postseason play. Transylvania next competes at the first two rounds of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golf championships on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30 in Harrison, Ohio. The first two rounds will be hosted by Mount St. Joseph University at the Miami Whitewater Forest Golf Course before the tournament continues the following week at the Hulman Links Golf Course in Terre Haute, Indiana.
