Terre Haute, Ind. – The Transylvania men's golf team further extended its lead in Saturday's third round of the 2017 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championships at Hulman Links Golf Course.
Carrying a three-stroke team lead into the second weekend of the four-round tournament, the Pioneers shot a third-round 299 on Saturday to compile an 894 after three rounds, stretching their lead by eight strokes.
The Pioneers sit in first place on the team leaderboard (+38), 11 strokes ahead of second-place Mount St. Joseph (+49), and 12 strokes ahead of third-place Franklin (+50) with 18 holes remaining in the HCAC Tournament.
At stake in Sunday's final round is an automatic berth into the NCAA Men's Golf Championships to the first-place team. As winners of the last 10 consecutive HCAC titles, the Pioneers are seeking their 11th straight bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Leading the charge on Saturday was a wily Pioneer veteran, senior Rob Canady, who fired a round-best one-under 71.
Canady now stands atop the individual leaderboard after three rounds with a three-over par 217. Freshman Spencer McKinney followed in Canady's footsteps with a three-round 222, and sits five strokes back of Canady for fourth place on the leaderboard.
One stroke behind McKinney is sophomore Blake Young, who shot a one-over 73, the second-best round of any Pioneer on Saturday.
"We were able to play in the preview in Terre Haute earlier last month and our guys really seem to enjoy the difficulty of the course," appraised men's golf head coach Brian Lane.
Junior Clay Church fired a 78, matching his first round score from last Sunday's excursion at Miami Whitewater to check in at 15th place. Junior Carson Wattenbarger shot an 81 in round three to round out the group of five, and sits in a tie for 24th.
The Pioneers will aim to complete their first-place finish as they wrap up the HCAC Championships on Sunday for the second straight round played at Hulman Links. Tee time for the final round is set for 10:00 a.m.
