INDIANAPOLIS – The Transylvania men's golf team began the 2018 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championships on Saturday at The Fort Golf Club in a similar fashion to how they have finished many of their past conference championship appearances over the last decade.
On top, with every member stepping up to contribute.
Sophomore Spencer McKinney set the pace for his team by firing a one-under par 71 to finish atop the Round One leaderboard and vault the Pioneers into first place on the team leaderboard with a total score of 292.
The four-over par team score of 292 slots the Pioneers 13 strokes ahead of second-place Mount St. Joseph University on the team leaderboard, and 14 strokes ahead of third-place Hanover College.
Sophomore Harrison Lane shot a three-over par 75 in his first round to make the most of his first appearance in an HCAC championship round.
Transylvania men's golf head coach Brian Lane, composer of the Pioneers' last 11 consecutive HCAC championships, was satisfied with his team's opening concerto on Saturday. "It's a terrific start," commented Lane. "We wanted the team to have a solid start and after a couple of tough holes, we really got comfortable. I saw some really good shots but I was more impressed with how we were able to think our way around the course."
Transylvania's fifth member, senior Carson Wattenbarger, also fielded a strong Round One score with a four-over par 76 as consistency was the theme of the day for Transylvania.
Berger provided perhaps the most fodder for the highlight reel on Saturday, finishing with a course-high eight birdies. Harrison Lane cupped four birdies, the third-most by any player in Round One.
Round Two of the HCAC Men's Golf Championships will tee off tomorrow at The Fort Golf Resort. Rounds Three and Four will begin next weekend as the final two rounds migrate to Eagle Rock Golf Course in Defiance, Ohio.
