Defiance, Ohio – Sophomore Spencer McKinney continued to set the bar through three rounds of play of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's golf tournament on Saturday afternoon at Eagle Rock Golf Club as the Pioneers put themselves in position for a conference title on Sunday.
Standing atop the individual leaderboard after the first weekend of play, McKinney fired an even par-70 in Saturday's third round, finishing second for the day while maintaining his first-place standing over the cumulative three rounds with a three-day score of 212 (two-under par).
McKinney's teammates also enjoyed sterling performances on Saturday as junior Blake Young carded a one-over par 71 to collate a three-round score of 18, good for a second-place tie on the individual leaderboard at four-over par for the tournament.
Junior Jack Berger shot a two-over 72, and sits in fifth place after round three. Sophomore Harrison Lane continued an impressive tournament run with a three-over 73 in the third round. At 11-over par after three rounds, the sophomore currently sits in sixth place.
Senior Carson Wattenbarger rounded out the group with an eight-over 78 to card a three-round score of 230 and is in a tie for ninth place. All five Transylvania golfers are currently in the top-nine, with no other school fielding more than two golfers in the top-10.
Transylvania shot a team-best score in round three of 286, six-over par. The Pioneers extended their distance on Saturday over second-place Hanover, which has now expanded to a 37-stroke lead. For three rounds, the Pioneers have a score of 874. Third-place Mount St. Joseph sits in third place on the team leaderboard, three strokes back of Hanover.
The Pioneers will aim for its 12th straight HCAC Tournament title, which would secure their 12th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. The fourth and final round of the HCAC Tournament tees off on Sunday at Eagle Rock Golf Club.
