Jekyll Island, Ga. – The Transylvania men's golf team began the spring portion of the 2018-2019 season on Friday with the first round of the Jekyll Island Invitational from the Jekyll Island Pine Lakes course.

Blake Young finished his first round on a red-hot tear, birdieing three of his last four holes to card a three-over-par 75 to lead the Pioneer top-five. Young is in a tie for 51st place upon the 150-player leaderboard after the first day of three-round action at Jekyll Island.

Transylvania currently possesses a share of 20th place on the 30-team leaderboard along with Christopher Newport University after each team recorded a team score of a 19-over-par 307.

Spencer McKinney finished the first round one stroke back of Young with a four-over-par 76. The junior made a seamless shift from the Transylvania men's basketball team back towards the links on Friday; after wrapping up his third season on the court less than a month ago, McKinney turned in a four-over-par 76 in his first official round on the greens of 2019, highlighted by six straight pars on the eighth through 13th holes, and a birdie on 18 to enter the clubhouse on a high note.

Jack Berger matched McKinney with a 76 on Friday with both players finishing in a tie for 66th place. Berger delivered 14 straight pars after a birdie on the first hole to turn in one of the most consistent days across the board.

Harrison Lane finished the first round with an eight-over-par 80 while Sam McNamara rounded out the group of five with an 82. Lane finished with eight pars on his final nine holes to finish just one-over-par on the back nine while the freshman began his day with five consecutive pars before cooling off.

Transylvania is back in action tomorrow for the second round of the 54-hole saga at Jekyll Island.
