round one scores

Flowery Branch, Ga. – Harrison Lane's eagle on the 12th hole highlighted a strong first round by the Transylvania men's golf team in the first round of the Royal Lakes Fall Invitational on Monday afternoon at the Royal Lakes Course.

Competing in the first of the two rounds on Monday afternoon, Lane carded a co-team-best even-par 72 to lead the Pioneers into a tie for 11th place on the 18-team leaderboard at the halfway point of the tournament.

Transylvania as a whole turned in a seven-over-par 295 round one team score on Monday.

Lane rose to the occasion as he made par on his opening hole, followed by a birdie on the third. The senior birdied the ninth hole before his highlight of the day, sinking a long putt for eagle on 12 to finish with an even-par 72.

Tim Alexander used a blazing final seven holes to match Lane with an even-par 72. Alexander led the Pioneers in the consistency department with a team-high 14 pars, including back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th holes. The sophomore made par on his first six and final five holes to finish the first round with a steady dose of execution.

Both players are in a share of 22nd place upon the 102-player leaderboard.

Spencer McKinney overcame an unforgiving front nine to finish with two birdies and six pars on the back nine to finish the day in a tie for 51st place with a three-over 75. Jeb Brumley finished one stroke back of McKinney in the first round with a four-over 76; Brumley devoured the back nine with four birdies, including two on the final four holes of play. Michael Collins rounded out Transy's group of five with a round-one 80.

Hampden-Sydney College topped the team leaderboard with a 10-under-par 278 and was followed by second-place Guilford and third-place Oglethorpe, the host school of the tournament. Lane and Alexander will enter Tuesday's round two six strokes back of the tournament leader, Guilford's Addison Manring.

The Pioneers will return to Royal Lakes tomorrow for the final round of the tournament, as well as their final round of the fall season. Transylvania is scheduled to tee off at approximately 9:40 a.m.
