Lexington, Ky. – In what was a hotly contested matchup, the Transylvania men's soccer team claimed a thrilling 2-0 victory over the in-state rival Centre College College at Pat Deacon Stadium on Thursday night.
The first half was a battle of possession as each team took its turn looking for an opening goal. However, with both defenses holding strong, the score remained 0-0 heading into halftime.
Transylvania finally broke through the Colonels defense at the 57 minute mark, as a beautiful cross from the foot of sophomore forward Jason Murillo found the head of sophomore midfielder Charlie Wend, who redirected the ball into the back of the net.
With the lead in tow, the Pioneers looked to add an insurance goal to their tally as the intensity of the game escalated.
With under 20 minutes remaining in the match, senior forward Riley Calhoon broke through Centre's defensive line and fired a shot past the Colonels goalkeeper, pushing the Pioneers' final margin of victory to 2-0.
The Transylvania goalkeeper tandem of sophomores Drew Grisham and Chandler Gaunce continued to dazzle, as they combined to record six saves en route to earning the Pioneers' fourth shutout in as many games.
With the win, Transylvania's record now moves to 5-0 on the young season.
Up next, the Pioneers will continue their current homestand as they face the Thomas More Saints on Wednesday night, September 20. First touch between the Pioneers and the Saints is set for 7:00 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium.
