Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's soccer team kicked off the 2018 season by earning a 1-1 draw with the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears at Pat Deacon Stadium on Saturday night.
The Pioneers attempted to take control of the game early by winning the possession battle over the Polar Bears. In the 12th minute, junior midfielder Jason Murillo sent a cross into the box that found the waiting foot of senior forward Thomas Shellenberg, who tapped the ball past the Ohio Northern goalkeeper to put the Pioneers in front, 1-0.
The Polar Bears responded with a goal of their own when Anthony DeNoi slipped a shot past junior goalkeeper Drew Grisham in the 14th minute to equalize the match.
The teams held the 1-1 tie into the halftime intermission.
The game took a turn in Transylvania's favor in the 60th minute when Ohio Northern's Dakota Swisher was assessed a red card and sent off for pulling Murillo down just outside of the penalty box.
With the man-up advantage in tow, the Pioneers looked for any chance of a go-ahead goal but were continually denied by the stellar defensive play of Ohio Northern.
With neither team willing to surrender a goal, regulation came to an end with the score still even at 1-1.
The Pioneers outshot the Polar Bears 3-1 in the first overtime period but were unable to break the tie.
Ohio Northern made a strong push for victory in the 105th minute, but Grisham made a spectacular diving save that secured the 1-1 result for the Pioneers.
Transylvania will now face a quick turnaround as they return to the pitch tomorrow afternoon to face the Otterbein University Cardinals. First touch between the Pioneers and the Cardinals is set for 3:30 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium.
