Transylvania men's soccer falls to Centre in home opener

Lexington, Ky. - The Transylvania men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to the in-state rival Centre College Colonels at Pat Deacon Stadium on Wednesday night.

With the loss, the Pioneers' record falls to 2-4 on the season, while the Colonels improve to 5-2-1.

The Colonels' offense forced the issue throughout the night, outshooting Transylvania 17-3 and creating nine corner kicks in comparison to just one for the Pioneers.

After 25 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Pioneers nearly broke through when Alec Coomes blasted a shot towards goal, but the Centre goalkeeper made a spectacular diving save to preserve the 0-0 score.

Then, in the 39th minute, Centre broke through when Alexander Garuba scored off a pass from Will Newton to put the Colonels ahead 1-0.

The Pioneers were unable to create any quality offensive chances over the final 45 minutes of play, allowing the Colonels to escape with the 1-0 victory.

Goalkeeper Drew Grisham was spectacular in net for Transylvania, collecting eight saves against just one goal allowed in the loss.

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, September 21 when they host the Midway University Eagles. First touch between the Pioneers and the Eagles is set for 3:30 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium.
